As a Technical Writer in the very techy Silicon Valley, I’ve decided to adopt the Agile Methodology that’s often utilized in tech companies throughout the Valley. The goal of Agile Methodology is that projects can be executed in small, manageable steps, rather than overwhelming a team with a huge project rollout at the end of a given time. I have no plans to bore you with tech talks here so I’ll make it plain for my own purposes: I’m going to manage my projects in baby steps.
I have managed to inundate myself with too many things that fancy my interests, and quite frankly, I don’t feel like I’ve mastered anything at all. My interests vary:
1. I enjoy spending time with my husband
2. I enjoy cooking
3. I enjoy reading novels
4. I want to be a really good seamstress/tailor
5. I want to be really good at my job
6. I want to take better professional looking pictures and direct some really cool videos. I’ve always subscribed to the theory that we are capable of doing anything, though we cannot do everything (at least not all at once anyway).
So which one do I give up? Are there any readers suffering from this dilemma?
I’ve decided that, rather than toss any of these exciting hobbies (my husband is not a hobby, so I’m not sure why I’ve included him on this list) I’m going to spend the month of March reflecting on how to tackle each one individually. To start, I’m giving up television for the month, save my 7 p.m. episode of Jeopardy during the weekdays, and 9 p.m. episode of Homeland that my husband and I like to enjoy. I’ve also decided to give up most of my social media time. It’s truly what workplace psychologists call a Situational Time Waster. I’m still learning to wean myself off Instagram and the occasional YouTube, but Facebook is definitely going out of the window.
With the free time, I’m hoping to provide more content here and YouTube, while reserving at least an hour before bedtime for a good book. Balance is the key to life, which I plan on living to its fullest.
